Part 1: Leaving unsustainability behind

As an environmental scientist, I share my story to inspire you to think about sustainability in your life.  As a working professional, I discovered just how unsustainable my lifestyle was.  I was working 50-60 hours a week, without permanent employment,  not knowing if I’d be able to feed my dog or where I was going to live.  To stay gainfully employed I would also have to move every few years. For me this was unsustainable, given the mental pressure of such a nomadic of this lifestyle. I wanted a life sustainable at all levels–mentally, physically, financially, and of course environmentally!

For me, the solution to sustainable human living begins with a homestead.

Here, I can pursue a lifestyle kind to myself and kind to the Earth. Mentally and emotionally, being around livestock has been really therapeutic for me.  I’ve gotten physically stronger from doing chores, and am experiencing less pain. Although the setup costs have been higher than anticipated, I know this will eventually lead to a lower-cost way of living.

Mostly, though, this lifestyle allows me to practice what I preach as an environmental scientist.  Philosophically, I was already drawn towards stewardship of the Earth and our fellow creatures.   Now I act on that moral philosophy by doing things like using less water and less electricity.  Taking care of the environment increases the ability of the Earth to keep us alive and gives me joy to know I’m part of sustainable human solutions.
